The Irish Brigade was made up of mostly Irish immigrants who landed in New York. The Brigade was made up of the 63rd, 69th and 88th New York, the 28th Massachusetts and the 166th Pennsylvanian.
At 4am on the 11th Of December they crossed the Rappahannock to ready themselves for the coming battle.
An assault began on entrenched Confederate defenders along the Sunken Wall on the heights behind the city on 13th December. About a mile up the hill the confederate army was waiting for them. They were protected by a strong stone wall.
Union commander Burnside ordered four separate attacks on the position. But the attacks were decimated. The confederate line was five men deep, so it came under constant fire from the line.
The union Irish Brigade was not the only Irish Brigade on the battlefield that day facing them was the confederate Irish Brigade. What a twist of fate that was. But this did not stop them inflicting heavy casualties on the union Irish Brigade.
At the end of the day the Irish Brigade had lost 14 out of 15 officers and 512 men out of 1,000 who began the battle that day.
Burnside was relieved of his command by President Lincoln shortly after the battle but the Irish Brigade would go down in history for their valour that day.
